How did you first get involved in service at Bowdoin?

I got involved in service at Bowdoin through my Community Immersion Pre-O trip. I hadn't planned on doing much community service at Bowdoin. I thought I had done enough in high school and just wanted a warm bed to sleep in for Pre-O. But after a few days of working in the local community, meeting leaders from local agencies, and hearing about the programs my Pre-O leaders were involved in, I was hooked.

What have you gained from your service experiences
and working in the community?

I have learned everything through my service experiences. It is in these experiences that I learn new skills, like spackling; that I am reminded of life outside of campus, of the work that is going on in my surrounding communities; that I am humbled by the dedication by those who make it a priority in their lives to serve the common good, and it is these experiences that allow me to see and process, in real faces and real lives, the facts, figures, and forces that I had previously only read about.

What does it mean to serve the common good?

To serve the Common Good is to sacrifice something of myself so that the needs of others can be met. Working to meet the needs of others and to develop community is to work toward the common good. My time at Bowdoin has shown me that serving the common good can take many forms, be it listening, feeding, or teaching, but no matter how it is carried out, it must be done.
