The director is responsible for the Museum of Art: collections, exhibitions, special programs, policy, grants, operations, personnel, visitors, financial management, facilities, education, etc.
Responsible for scheduling tours, volunteer program, school outreach program, and membership program. Oversees director's daily office operations and maintains office files and mailing lists. Manages social functions held in the museum.
Responsible to the director for financial, administrative, and facilities management; grant-writing and fund-raising; security; sales and reception desk procedures; publications; web site; scheduling Museum spaces for non-academic purposes; and, in the absence of the director, operations of the Museum of Art.
Generates exhibitions, programs, and publications which support and reinforce the academic mission of the College and are relevant to the Museum’s permanent collection. Schedules all gallery talks and programs by visiting scholars, faculty, and staff.
Coordinates and documents outgoing and incoming works of art related to the permanent and loan collections as well as exhibitions. Creates and maintains collections management records (manual and computerized) including inventory and insurance records. Manages the on-line collections "kiosk." Responsible for establishing and monitoring storage systems.
Handler of all art objects for the Museum. Responsible for the proper display, construction, and lighting of permanent and temporary exhibitions and maintenance of those exhibitions. Packs, crates, moves, mats, frames, and installs works of art; maintains storage with registrar; manages inventories of exhibition supplies; prepares Museum for special programs and works with facilities issues.
Assists with installation of the Museum galleries and storage areas, including unloading, unpacking, and moving objects. As part of the exhibition team, maintains exhibitions and lighting, and works with facilities issues.
Responsible for Museum Shop operations: welcomes visitors to the Museum; provides information about the Museum, College, and community; selects and develops shop inventory; displays merchandise and conducts sales; and prepares sales and attendance reports.
Assists curator with research, exhibitions, and programs. Drafts and distributes public relations materials. Produces exhibition labels, handles details of public education program. Responsible for working with collections and Bowdoin College classes, as well as scheduling classes in the museum using the collections.
Works with Bowdoin College faculty to bring the art collections into the College’s larger curriculum. The intern assists the faculty with class sessions in the Museum of Art, supervises collections’ access for the courses, and, at the invitation of the faculty, teaches and helps with course assignments.
Responsible for photography rights and reproduction requests related to works in the Museum's collection. Assists Registrar with data maintenance in the computerized collections management system, EmbARK.
